6 Reasons To Head North For An All-Round Adventure

Blog by Jock Safari Lodge

If you’re dreaming of a summer vacation in the African bushveld or just need a well-deserved time out, ‘go wild’ and choose one of the best safari lodges in South Africa – Jock Safari Lodge. With extensive Big 5 game viewing and conservation and sustainability at its core, you’ll find that Jock really is the perfect holiday choice! And to further entice you, we’ve listed 6 reasons to pack a bag and head North for an all-round adventure!

Getting There

There’s a song whose lyrics include: “I don’t care how you get here, just get here if you can” … and with many modes of transport available, a visit to Jock Safari Lodge, is so easy to plan. As one of the best safari lodges in South Africa, and with so much to see and do, the easiest and certainly the quickest way to “get here” is by air.

Daily flights operate between Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg and many of the private lodges within the Park. Most flights are operated by S.A. Airlink with flight times of between 90 minutes and 2 hours, and will deliver you to the nearest airstrip of the lodge you are travelling to.

A Dog Named Jock

Jock Safari Lodge is located in the south western corner of the Kruger National Park at the confluence of the Biyamiti and Mitomeni rivers . It was the first privately owned and operated concession in the park and its prime location is regarded as the one of the best Big 5 game viewing areas in Kruger.

Besides big game, the lodge is named after another 4-legged creature – a brave and loyal dog called ‘Jock’. A Staffordshire bull terrier-cross, he was the constant companion of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick during the 1884 Barberton gold boom. In 1907 Sir Percy penned the best-selling South African children’s book – Jock of the Bushveld – which also focusses on the transport riding route which cut through the southern section of the park near to where Jock Safari Lodge is located.

A Stay In The Bush

Jock Safari Lodge offers 2 accommodation options, perfectly positioned under a canopy of Jackalberry trees and high on the banks of the Biyamiti River. This vantage point allows guests to view passing wildlife in the dry riverbed below.

MAIN JOCK is screened by lush trees and reed walls, and all 12 individual thatched rooms exude solitude and harmony with the landscape. Children over 6 are welcome at Main Jock.

FITZPATRICK’S AT JOCK is a 3 roomed lodge perfect for small parties and families and children under 6 years of age are welcome.

Extended Game Viewing Opportunities

The Jock Concession is made up of 6000 hectares [or 15 000 acres] and offers excellent game viewing all year round.

The Concession enjoys exclusive traversing rights with additional access through the main Park before and after self-drive guests are allowed entry and exit. This ensures our guests receive extended viewing time and are at no time rushed from sighting to sighting.

Game is plentiful and free roaming on the Jock Concession with regular sightings of the Big 5 [leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo and rhino]. Birdwatchers are spoilt for choice with around 500 species of birds across the Kruger National Park. For those preferring creatures that hop, hiss and slither, there are 60 species of reptile, 40 species of frog and a variety of fish, all guaranteed to keep your eyes glued to the ground.

Conservation is At The Heart of What We Do

The Kruger National Park has been operational for over 120 years and to ensure that their legacy is respected and sustained, Jock Safari Lodge was built in accordance to the most stringent eco-management criteria in South Africa. All off-road driving for predator sightings on the concession is done in an environmentally sensible manner to maintain a low impact and to preserve this unique heritage for future generations. We are actively involved with numerous conservation and research projects of rare and endangered species and support SANParks conservation efforts through the Jock Environmental Monitoring Unit [JEMU]. A percentage of all turnover generated by tourism is given back to SANParks which means that each guest staying at Jock contributes directly to conservation not only in Kruger but also to other national parks.

Kids on Safari

Fitzpatrick’s at Jock is perfect for little Eco-warriors. The Kids on Safari programme allows for many hours of exploration and fun – from short night and day bush walks to biscuit baking, insect catching and frogging, and a visit to the Skull Garden, there’s all this and more to experience on a Family Safari!

Our best experience of Kruger was at Jock’s. You can feel the love for nature in the heart and soul of the wonderful owners. The rooms are practically in the wild. We saw elephants just passing in front of the room. Sleeping in matras under the stars (if you want), amazing food in the river bed. Will never forget this experience!

We spent several days here in early March — simply, the best! Very comfortable room and excellent food, with a warm staff. Highlights are the twice a day game drives. This definitely is not “pre-packaged” stuff — your guide (ours was Jacob) has a keen sense of where to find the animals, and drives over river beds and down back trails to find them -in a respectful way. We eagerly anticipated this part of our trip, and it exceeded expectations. You must go to have this experience.

I visited Kruger and Jock Lodge in 2017 and all I wanted to do is come back. That happened in Jan 2022 and once again it was wonderful in every way. The location is on a normally dry river bed so you can see wildlife from your window or terrace. The staff is so gracious and helpful. The wildlife guides are the most knowledgable and enthusiastic I have ever met. I come for the beauty and the animals and Jock Lodge delivers every time.
