The Legend behind Jock Safari Lodge

Jock Game Drives

The Jock concession is noted for its diversity in game, particularly the Big 5.

It’s very humbling to be considered the best 5-star game lodge in the Kruger National Park by our guests. Guests which return year upon year to not only experience this incredible private concession wilderness in order to view the Big and Little 5 and the bountiful flora in this unique area, they also return to hear tails of the famous Jock of the Bushveld – a prominent part of South African history.

To briefly take you back in time, the prospect of gold lured men and women to Southern Africa. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, author of the animal classic, Jock of the Bushveld, was one of these. The prospectors passed through some of Africa’s most scenic, untamed wilderness areas and one of them was here at Jock Safari Lodge.

Today, this Big 5 wilderness concession experience is virtually unchanged from those early times and is an area noted for its diversity in game, particularly the Big 5.  Nestled at the confluence of the Mitomeni and Biyamiti rivers at the southern tip of the Kruger National Park, the legend of an intrepid explorer, Sir Percy Fitzpatrick and his trusted dog, Jock, lives on.

Sir Fitzpatrick’s adventures during the pioneering days in the Bushveld are vividly described in Jock of the Bushveld, now a South African classic. The book appeared in 1907 and had an enthusiastic reception. It has remained a favourite in South Africa and has been widely read abroad, appearing in several forms and languages.

As a result of this legend, guests now enjoy 5-star accommodation, which is ideal for families, educational game drives and wilderness walks, decadent spa treatments, plus traditional and modern cuisine to suit everyone’s palate whilst enjoying their very own modern-day adventure.

It’s so heart-warming to receive great guest feedback such as this 5-star review:

I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. 5 stars in the very heart of Kruger National Park. Everything they do from pickup at the airport is laser focused on getting you the best wildlife viewing experience possible. Their location means some of the best sightings are just outside the lodge’s gate. I saw all of the “big 5” within 36 hours and all of the “big 7” in 48 hours. Not content to rest on those laurels, they took me on 2 bush walks. Each time we were able to get within 50 meters of white rhinos. As a side note the food, accommodations, and staff were beyond excellent 😉 My ranger, Micah, was absolutely fantastic and had a rare talent of being able to interact with each guest in exactly the right way for them. I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else in South Africa and having a better time.
